stolen from the new yorker magazine
had a lot to think about lately
what with the drop in gold prices
ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
sorry
just felt like having a laugh
went to work friday night
then on saturday night
then it rained and we went home early
then i showed up at the job on sunday
and
no one was there
so i went back to my motel room
spent half of what i made
but it was interesting to be in a room
for 30 hours
with news on half of the television stations
i was under close observation
on the job and in my motel room
to see if i was going to commit
criminal acts
i ate two bags of microwave popcorn
but that was legal
i think
aspersions- the making of a calumnious report
blacks legal dictionary
someone said i am a xenophobe recently
that is a lie
i am not at all afraid of xenon
not the gas or the warrior princess
not afraid of argon either
for that matter
not the gas or the movie
i am however very afraid of florine
i do have an opinion on immigration
i personally like to be around a lot of immigrants from
other places because i get to hear how they
compare this country to their country
i have learned a great deal from persons
who came from countries with repressive
regimes and how they view the direction
this country is headed
i think some of them keep one bag packed
ready to head for the border if things
go sour in a hurry
i have never met a french person who
thinks this country fares favorably to
france though
i also took the effort to look up
militia in the law dictionary
militia-" the body of citizens in a state,
enrolled for discipline as a military force,
but not engaged in actual service except
in emergencies, as distinguished from regular
troops or a standing army."
\
then i looked up the second amendment
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the
security of a free state, the right of the people to
keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."
except for crazy people of course
that is not in the amendment
but i am sure
they meant crazy people are not allowed
to have guns
mark twain said that if every person had a gun
handy every time they wanted one
none of use would escape prison
that sounds about right to me
so i was wondering how come the gun
owners lobby does not make the
gun owners be well regulated or disciplined
or anything else for that matter
if you can beg borrow or steal a gun
or the money to buy one with
you are allowed to have a gun
this seems absurd to me
i had lots of guns over the years
i used to shoot the heads off dragonflies
and minnows and if i could kill a snake
with my BB gun i felt like i had saved
the neighborhood from a menace
i think there are still people who
think they are going to be heros
if they can just shoot somebody
dead
they are not well regulated or disciplined
they are just looking to enlarge their
social status by killing what they perceive
to be a menace
when often it is themselves who are
the menace
they are vigilante delusionals
anyhow i think if a person wants a gun
they should be qualified by a teacher
on a shooting range for that gun
and the more deadly that weapon is
the more they have to earn the qualifications
considering that more active duty
military combat personnel
who were in afganistan and iraq
have committed suicide than were killed in
combat i don't think having been in the military
is necessarily a qualification
for having a gun
obviously there will be disagreement
i think the nra has ignored their responsibility
and the reason they were formed
which was to
train people to shoot and be safe with guns
i wish i had been weapons trained when i was a kid
instead of when i was an adult
and i wish even more i had been around
some competent naturalist who would have
instilled in me more desire to learn about the
wildlife and be less inspire to shoot at it
but i watched american sportsman and other
shows on the weekends and saw kudu and rhinos
being shot for sport
too bad for me
too bad for the wildlife

copyright
my new girlfriend
oh i guess you are wondering how an
old short poor guy like me gets a
homminid hottie like this
well she saw me rummaging through the
dumpster and recognized my excellent
hunter gatherer skills
i have spent some time recently working
as an extra on a movie
i was not the star
not even the co-star
actually i was like the mole
on lincolns face on mount rushmore
you had to look very close
and the lighting had to be just right
to see me at all
but the meal was good
and the pay also
but i digress
this fellow sits across the table from me
and he has in tow his lady friend
she is not the same skin tone as him
she is considered to be in another racial group
whatever
but it is apparent he is treating her like a
part of his apparel
like see my hot car
see my hot phone
see my hot girlfriend
yeah right
this has happened a lot
i just dont quite get it
girlfriends are not apparel
i was watching the news this morning
as i am prone to do when
confined to the stationary bike
i see that the american lady is wanted
back in italy for another trial
yeah right
you dont go girl
actually the picture is not of my girlfriend
at all
it is a painting of a rendition of what
Ardipithecus ramidus
might look like

the copyright is by J. Mathernes 2009

this cartoon stolen from new yorker magazine
sitting on the stationary bike
my gaze shifts from left

at 20 t v screens
10 stations
28 stab wounds
2 shots to the head
you go girl
sinkhole got the wrong bush
but wait
what is this
the weeping preachers
what in the hell are these people
trying to sell
that s o b is showing pictures of kids
squatting in dirty water
drinking from a five gallon kettle
while cows in the back ground are
pooping in the water
and this preacher is asking for
all the money you can spare
if you only have 48 bucks
send it all he says
and we will drill wells for these
poor unfortunate people
these people need a course with
ms manners
and a few coffee cups
and turn those cows into bar b que
wise the hell up people
get into the 21st century
plant some vegetable gardens
get some goats and chickens
put that preacher on the bus back to the airport
wake up
"epoca de vacas flacas" as they say down south of here
"But then I sigh, and with a piece of Scripture,
tell them- that God bids us do good for evil:
and thus I clothe my naked villainy with old
odd ends, stolen forth of Holy Writ:
and seem a saint when most I play the devil.
Why, I can smile, and murder while I smile:
and cry, content, to that which grieves my heart;
and wet my cheeks with artificial tears,
and frame my face to all occasions.

"To despise the animal..."
Copyright Bootlegcircus@blogspot.com
listened to a report by a fellow
on the radio sunday evening
he talked about corruption
in louisiana
lots of corruption according to him
mainly folks in elected office
trying to augment their income
that sort of thing
probably part of the
highly esteemed
tradition i keep hearing about
several billion bucks
is missing from the money sent
to fight
the wars
not much said about that
though
probably part of the highly
regarded tradition
some more
lots of the money comes back to this
country to start
companies and corporations
which get a lot of government
contracts
go figure
i went out on several jobs last week
making that gulag wage of 7 dollars
and twenty five cents an hour
one job was for some guys who
were doing some building in a city park
the supervisor wore a usmc sticker
on his hardhat
at the end of the work day we chatted
about his security work in the middle east
he said he was making two thousand bucks
a day
he said he hated all of africa
said it was all corrupt
i told him the rhinos elephants and gorillas
in africa
were being poached into extinction
i asked him if he would go back to
africa to help train the wildlife conservationists
to protect the wildlife
he asked how much that paid
i said it did not pay anything
it was volunteer work
i think he thought i was crazy
i went to another job which was ending
and the construction foreman just spent
nearly three years building a casino
a pretty nice casino
as casinos go
i suppose
i always get asked the question
why in the hell dont you get a real
job
i dont know what that means exactly
whats more real than helping to build
a casino
really
so i was wondering about what people
will tell their grand children when
they ask
grand pa did you ever see a rhino
or an elephant
or a gorilla
before they went extinct
i spent several years as an animal
keeper and i cared for three
square lipped rhinos
mondo hitari and wagasa
lovely animals
sublimely so
when they moved the two females
to a new exhibit
the male
mr mondo
whined like a puppy
until they were reunited
i was profoundly shocked
i thought these animals were
not very emotional
but they are
and very much in need of saving
everyone should be a zookeeper
at one time of their life
or another
it will likely change how one
views the lives of our fellow
inhabitants on this planet

to seek value only at the level of
conscious intelligence and rational

"In the light of eternity..."
copyright bootlegcircus@blogspot.com
christmas day looking south
spent 12 days of christmas camped
near the levee
enjoyed most of it
weather very dynamic
expecting tornado's
they were spotted all around me
but never occurred close enough
to do more than make me contemplate
my mortality
thats a good thing
listened to the news on the
radio a lot
some news overwhelmingly sad
and i had to turn to reading
i had happened to pick up a book
a few months ago which i was reading
"Bad men do what good men dream"
by r j simon a forensic psychologist
very informative book
the author states that we all have
the potential to do extreme evil
we have to practice not doing it
berserkers have been around for
a long time and before guns they
bashed heads with clubs
i came across the term
aesthetic distance
in the book i read
"Death and Money in the afternoon"
about the history of bullfighting in spain
the term refers to the sense that what
is happening on stage is not happening
to you
i have noticed that this notion seems
to be increasingly absent in our society
i dont watch much television around
camp
none at all actually
i listen to radio programs
i look at a lot of
outside
trees and birds and raccoons and such
keeps me kind of centered
yesterday i watched 90 minutes
of television while in the health club
90 minutes
i got dragged through the cesspool
of life
dead non existent girlfriends
hostages
weapons dilemmas
economic collapse
dietary dilemmas
and on and on and on
the only problems i have
camping is
when i run out of food or water
then i have to go to town
sometimes i catch rainwater
and sometimes i pick wild fruit
which helps a lot
"Really to see the sun rise or go down
every day, so to relate ourselves to a
universal fact, would preserve us sane
forever." H. D. Thoreau
i have some recommendations
i listened to an interview on
wwno radio program called
inside out with alan tousaint
which is well worth looking up
and i heard this fellow named
catfish keith on taylor cafferys
hootnany power music show
and i looked him up on utube
excellent guitar and vocals
he says he was influenced by a fellow
named joseph pence
i came across sonny boy williamson
singing nine degrees below zero
and playing the harmonica
this is the gold standard of blues
and a while back i bought a copy
of the 1932 movie rain directed by
lewis milestone with joan crawford
i was very impressed

that what we desired would have
been fatal to us, and that we would
have avoided was essential to our
well-being." Fenelon
